CiTi:Schools from across the globe connect for Monster Match
Students from Brewerton Elementary School connected with students at an International School in Prague, Czech Republic for a Monster Match distance learning connection recently and for one teacher, it was a homecoming of sorts. Sarah Morris, a teacher at the International School in Prague, was a teacher at Brewerton Elementary School the previous school year and the connection was a chance to check in with fellow teachers and even students from her class. In the weeks prior to the Monster Match connection, third grade teachers at Brewerton Elementary, Mary McCabe and Pamela Potter had their classes working together to create monsters and voted on which one would be the class’ representative with the Monster Match. They wrote a detailed description of their monster and sent it to the class in Prague. Using the description, the class created their version of the monster and during the video connection, each class shared their monster.

As the classes connected they each shared information about their school and community and students at Brewerton learned that students in Ms. Morris’ class come from all around the world including Australia, India,Turkey and Egypt to name a few. What they also learned is that despite the geographic distance, they are very similar.

Distance Learning Coordinator Laurie Ouderkirk, using Google Earth, zoomed in on Brewerton and then navigating across the globe, zoomed in on Prague to illustrate to the students in each class the distance that separated the two locations.

The classes plan to continue to stay in touch through a pen pal connection and also through the “Flat Stanley” project. Flat Stanley is based on a book by Jeff Brown and students follow Stanley and document his travels around the country and the world.
